The
quilt is made up of individually designed squares; each one devoted
to a woman in the U.S. who has died of pregnancy-related causes since
1982. One quilt square is designed and dedicated to each mother's
memory and may mention the date and place of death and the name of
the woman. The Safe Motherhood Quilt is the voice for women who can
no longer speak for themselves.
To be honored and remembered on The Safe Motherhood Quilt:
-
The woman died as a result of a complication of pregnancy or birth
- The
woman's death occurred since 1982
- The
woman died within a calendar year after the end of her pregnancy
(documented by an obituary, death certificate, or relative's account).
Technical
Information
Quilt pieces should measure 16 inches horizontally by 12 inches vertically.
The creative use of special details (bangles, sequins, etc.) is encouraged.
Please leave a margin of at least one-inch on all sides of the quilt
square.
If you know of any woman whose death fits the particulars of the protocol,
please contact Ina May Gaskin
at the address below. If you would like to remember someone by contributing
a quilt square, please download the
information form (PDF) and send it to us along with the quilt
square and other documentation material.
Please note that we have volunteers who will help create quilt pieces
for those who would like to provide fabric and/or information. We
also intend to create a virtual quilt where the quilt and the individual
pieces will be presented on this website. The Virtual Quilt project aims to put a face and a story on every quilt piece.
Additional information on the virtual quilt will be available in the
near future.
