Susan Special

On June 8, 2003, Susan Special died at the age of 38 in Boca Raton, Florida. Pregnant with her first baby who was in a persistently breech position at the time of birth, she underwent a cesarean, and died a few hours after having a sudden seizure just after her baby was pulled out of her uterus. During the lawsuit that followed her death, attorneys on either side of the case argued over whether she had died from an amniotic fluid embolism or from an inappropriate response to her respiratory distress. The jury ultimately decided in favor of Susan Special's anesthesiologist, although the medical examiner who performed the autopsy testified that she had not died from an amniotic fluid embolism. Her son, Nicholas Special, survives.
