Dear Supporter of Safe Birth-

The Safe Motherhood Quilt Project is offering sponsorship programs which will fund educational support initiatives, events to display the Quilt around the world, the production of printed materials and administrative work associated with the project.

This project is one of the most important in the United States for spotlighting U. S. maternal mortality rates over the last few decades, educating the public on issues surrounding maternal mortality and honoring the women who have died and the families they have left behind. In my opinion, this project is not only ground-breaking, but necessary to ensure that positive changes are made in the realm of maternity care in the United States and other parts of the world that regard U. S. maternity care as the model to follow.

I remember the first time I heard about the quilt project in 2002. As a doula, mother, sister and daughter, this project moved me to tears. Knowing that our shortcomings as a society meant many maternal deaths were not being counted in our official maternal mortality statistics left me with loads of questions, such as the following:

How many mothers are actually dying as a direct result of being pregnant or giving birth?

How many die between six weeks and a year following the end of their pregnancies?

Do we have a system in place that is uniform across the country to record maternal mortality?

Why do U. S. death certificates differ from state to state? Why is the CDC Standard Death Certificate with its five questions related to prior pregnancy states not a requirement for death reporting in each state?

Why are U. S. maternal mortality rates going up, when in most industrialized countries, these rates are either remaining the same or being reduced?

We are offering sponsorship of the website www.rememberthemothers.org The Safe Motherhood Quilt Project.

1. Because this project is important and necessary for the recognition that the problem of a rising maternal mortality rate in the United States is still largely unrecognized by the medical profession, the general public, and the rest of the world.

2. This project is associated with Ina May Gaskin, whose reputation for integrity is well known.

3. How cool is it to be a business and listed on Ina May Gaskin's website? We all know that when it comes to birth, she is the funniest and coolest midwife around.
